APPLICATIONS

Carminic acid is a glucosidal hydroxyanthrapurin derived from cochineal (the dried bodies of female Coccus cacti). It is the colouring principle of carmine, a bright red coloring matter. Carmine is the hydrated aluminium chelate of carminic acid in the molar ratio 1:2. Both carminic acid and carmine are used as coloring agent in food, cosmetics and meications. They are used as histologic stains for biological materials. The chemical designation of carminic acid is 7-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-9,10-dihydro-3,5,6,8-tetrahydroxy-1-methyl-9,10-dioxo- 2-anthracenecarboxylic acid.
